Field Notes
8/1/08-12/31/08

2008 was another good year for southern immigrants.  Cloudless Sulphur was first reported on August 27th and continued to be reported until November 1st.  Only a single Common Checkered Skipper was reported this year, on September 20th.  Fiery Skipper was first reported on August 10th, Sachem was first reported on September 4th  and  a single Long-tailed Skipper reported on September 10th.  Ocola Skippers were reported during the period September 28th through October 11th.  A Giant Swallowtail was reported on August 18th.  This was the first report of this species since 2001.  The influx of Tawny Emperors, a southern species at or close to the northern end of its range, continued into August, with the last report of the species on August 22nd.  Much like 2006 and 2007,  an unusually high number of Red-banded Hairstreaks reported, with the first one reported on August 12th and the last one reported on September 14th.  Unlike 2006 and 2007 when all reported Red-banded Hairstreaks were at or near the coast, in 2008, Red-banded Hairstreaks were reported from Naugatuck and Lyme, both inland localities.  Perhaps this species is following the rivers inland from the coast.  It was not a big year for migrating Monarchs.  The highest reported total was 130 individuals reported on September 20th.

Please note that caps indicate the first record posted for the year and italics indicate the last.
