”THE SELF-MEDICATING
CATERPILLAR”
presented by Mike Singer
Biology Department, Wesleyan University
| Mike Singer is an assistant professor in the biology department at Wesleyan University. Mike’s been interested in Lepidoptera since age seven and was an avid butterfly collector and observer during his childhood in Los Angeles. This interest broadened to butterfly-plant interactions and butterfly gardening during his teenage years, leading him toward PhD research in this area after college at the University of Arizona in Tucson. His field is the study of the ecology and evolution of interactions between plants, herbivores, and carnivores (tri-trophic interactions). Mike’s research focuses on the host-plant selection by caterpillars of the tiger moth (Arctiidae), local to southeastern Arizona, because it offers some novel research opportunities. These caterpillars seem to vary what kinds of plants they eat when they get parasitized by flies, so that they can actually kill off their parasites with plant secondary chemicals, thus “The Self-Medicating Caterpillar”. Come out and enjoy this lively presentation. | ![]() |
