Coral Hairstreak

Status: Common

 

Flight Time: mid-June through July, 1 brood

Habitat: edges of scrubby woodlands, brushy clearings and transitional fields

 

Adult Food Source: milkweed (Asclepias), meadowsweet (Spirea latifolia), White Sweet Clover (Melilotus alba), Dogbane (Apocynum)

 

Larval Host Plant: Cherry species such as Black Cherry (Prunus serotina) and Choke Cherry (P. virginiana)

 

Winter: egg, on host plant

 

Comments: female Coral Hairstreaks will often select young cherry trees (2-5' tall) to lay their eggs. The eggs can are typically found at the base of the trees.
